IN/CO Grant Program | Applications Open for Round 3

June 7, 2021 by CAA Admin

The Colonial Academic Alliance is pleased to invite applications for a third round of IN/CO Grants, with plans to select finalists by late 2021.

The Colonial Academic Alliance is turning to true innovators – faculty and staff at our member institutions – to generate powerful ideas that creatively address pressing challenges in higher education, fuel collaboration between institutions, and promote innovation in intellectual inquiry. The Alliance will support and champion these ideas through a third round of Innovate/Collaborate (IN/CO) Grant Program funding, providing grants of $10,000—$40,000 to multi-institutional teams of faculty and staff over two years. A maximum of $160,000 total will be awarded in the third round.

Importantly, the IN/CO Grant program is quite unique — the Alliance encourages applicants to propose innovative initiatives through a short form application, then helps selected finalists identify appropriate partners across our member institutions. Given the diversity and geographic breadth of the Alliance, IN/CO applicants are not expected to forge these partnerships on their own. The Alliance also provides continuous support for IN/CO Grant teams throughout the lifespan of the grant.

PRIORITY FUNDING AREAS

IN/CO Grants support multi-institutional teams of faculty and staff in the exploration and development of creative approaches and best practices that positively impact student success, advance scholarship, and promote the dissemination of best practices in one of the following priority funding areas:

  • Innovative teaching & learning
  • High impact practices
  • Civic engagement
  • Entrepreneurial education
  • Student-athlete initiatives
  • Student wellness and mental health

APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS

Interested faculty and staff at Alliance member institutions are invited to complete an IN/CO Short Form application briefly introducing a topic, idea, or challenge that they wish to explore in collaboration with other member institutions. Please clearly complete each field of the application, succinctly making a case for funding. IN/CO Short Form Applications are due on October 1, 2021 by 5:00PM. Please email the completed application form and any relevant attachments as one PDF document to Executive Director Lindsey Interlante via email at li@caa-academics.org.

SELECTION PROCESS

Alliance staff will vet proposals for compliance with the guidelines outlined in the IN/CO Short Form application. Compliant proposals will be presented to the Provosts’ Council, who will select a slate of finalists based on the IN/CO Grant Evaluation Rubric. Finalists will work with Alliance staff to identify potential partners at other Alliance institutions, respond to any questions or concerns put forth by the Provosts’ Council, develop a grant budget, and complete a finalized project plan for approval. The Provosts’ Council will reach a final decision on which applicants to fund by November 19, 2021. All proposals will receive a response from Alliance staff by December 3, 2021.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION AND QUESTIONS

Applicants wishing to receive additional information on IN/CO Grants or ask questions should contact Alliance Executive Director Lindsey Interlante at li@caa-academics.org.

*Project leaders for the “Ethical Reasoning in STEM Through Multi-Disciplinary Collaborative Teaching” IN/CO Grant elected to postpone their study for one academic year, as virtual collaboration is not suitable for their planned co- teaching model; this initiative will kick off in fall 2021.

Recent Accomplishments

  • The Outcomes of Entrepreneurial Education project team recently completed two rounds of pilot testing and refinement of their survey instrument, gathering data from 250 current business school seniors at Towson and Elon.
  • James Madison University’s News site touted the work of the CAA Debate for Civic Learning initiative, available at “JMU receives CAA grant for civic debate.”
  • Co-authors Drew Stelljes (W&M), Jess Boersma (UNCW), Kevin Boston-Hill (Hofstra), and Paul Mabrey (JMU), all members of the CAA Debate for Civic Learning team, have received a tentative acceptance for publication of their article “Debate for Civic Learning: A model for renewing higher education’s civic mission” in the Pedagogy of the Polarized special issue of Journal of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning.
  • Faculty from the Using Historical Collections for Civic Engagement and Innovative Teaching & Learning team have incorporated components of Drexel’s Atwater Kent Collection into undergraduate courses at Drexel University, University of Delaware, and William & Mary.
  • The Toolkit for Assessment & Articulation of High-Impact Practices in Academic Libraries team recently presented a poster at the Library Assessment Conference.
  • The Toolkit for Assessment & Articulation of High-Impact Practices in Academic Libraries has also developed a prototype of format for presenting Assessment Toolkit, available to preview online.
  • Nicole Tekulve and Angela Wacker will share their work on the Toolkit for Assessment & Articulation of High-Impact Practices in Academic Libraries grant, hosting a roundtable discussion during the April 2021 Association of College and Research Libraries Conference.

Report

Understanding that we are in a time of adjustment and uncertainty, the Alliance is currently working with each grant team to modify timelines, adjust grant budgets, and provide extensions as necessary. For the purposes of the spring 2021 update, grantees were asked to submit brief summaries of the progress made in the past year, available to view in the March 2021 Update Report.

History

The Colonial Academic Alliance launched the Innovate/Collaborate (IN/CO) grant program in 2017, intended to incentivize cross-institutional collaboration, encourage the development of new initiatives, and leverage the diversity of institutions in the Alliance. To date, the Alliance Provosts’ Council has awarded a total of $335,000 in IN/CO Grants over two rounds of funding.

Through the first round of IN/CO Grants, the Provosts’ Council provided $156,500 in seed funds to support four projects, focused on experiential learning, high impact practices, the science of learning, and global engagement. In the first 18 months of the program, first round IN/CO awardees attracted an additional $282,500 in external funding from foundations to support the projects moving forward.

Encouraged by the success of the first round, the Alliance Provosts’ Council elected to fund a second round of IN/CO Grants, awarding $178,500 of funding to support the five initiatives discussed above.

Questions about the IN/CO Grant program are welcome and should be directed to Alliance Executive Director Lindsey Interlante at li@caa-academics.org.
